Pan-European study reveals packaging trends

By Rory Harrington , 20-Dec-2010

Lightweighting, recyclability and the development of eco-packaging have been revealed as the key issues for consumers, according to an analysis of packaging trends across seven major European countries by the French trade commission.

FoodProductionDaily.com caught up with Sophie Thillaye, from UBIFrance at last month’s Emballage trade show in Paris to talk about what this major survey uncovered and how it could help packaging manufacturers meet consumer concerns.

The trade development adviser for food and drink explained that different nationalities were expressing varying priorities: Northern European countries such as Sweden highlighted the need for lightweighting of packaging, a concern also backed by the French. But German consumer priorities appear to be focussing more on recyclability in place of lightweighting, while the UK's buying habits appeared to challenge consumer concerns for the need to lightweight food packaging.

The study also found that the desire from consumers across Europe for green packaging made from renewable and edible materials was a long-term trend that was here to stay.
