A rising concern is 'Energy' as increasing energy costs have an important economic impact on the food industry. Cooling systems, room temperature control, energy consuming manufacturing machines and delivery from distribution centers to stores/supermarkets are energy-intensive, driving up the consumption. 
An Energy Management Standard provides organizational framework for the food industry to integrate energy efficiency into management practices. This includes fine-tuning production processes and improving energy efficiency of manufacturing systems, and of the transportation fleet. There is a substantial financial benefit for a business given current high prices of energy.
